Best Free Things to Do Near Jaffa Street
Twelve genuinely free experiences within 15 minutes of 31 Jaffa Street — markets, viewpoints, and rooftop sunsets.
Jerusalem can be done on a shoestring without missing the magic. Here are twelve experiences within 15 minutes' walk of our hostel at 31 Jaffa Street that cost exactly zero shekels.
The big-ticket free attractions
The Western Wall — always free, 24/7. Touch the stones, write a note, slot it in.
The Holy Sepulchre — free entry to one of Christianity's most sacred sites.
Yad Vashem — Israel's Holocaust memorial. Free entry, two hours minimum. Light Rail to Mount Herzl, then 8 min walk.
Mahane Yehuda Market — free to walk through, smell, taste samples, and people-watch.
Free walking tours
Free Old City tour — 11am daily from Jaffa Gate (Sandeman's and similar). Tip what you can; ₪50 is fair.
Friday afternoon shuk tour — 14:00, meets at the entrance to Mahane Yehuda. Tip-based.
Viewpoints and rooftops
The Old City rooftops above the Cardo — climb the metal stairs, signposted from the Jewish Quarter. 360° view of all four quarters.
Mount of Olives lookout — taxi up (₪25 from our door), walk down. Best at sunrise.
Mishkenot Sha'ananim — first neighborhood built outside the Old City walls. Free park with views back to the wall. 12 min walk from us.
Quiet corners worth the walk
Nachlaot — the maze of alleys west of Mahane Yehuda. Hidden synagogues, painted murals, neighborhood cats. Best at dusk.
Sacher Park — Jerusalem's biggest. Picnic and people-watching. 15 min walk.
Shabbat in the religious quarter — Friday evening in Mea Shearim is its own free experience. Dress modestly, walk respectfully.
Free during specific times
Shrine of the Book at Israel Museum — free on Saturdays for Israeli citizens; foreigners pay ₪50, but worth budgeting once for the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Tower of David light show — paid (₪70) but the citadel exterior glow is visible free from outside Jaffa Gate at night.
Direct Booking
Stay at Capsule BH on Jaffa Street and walk to all of these. Book from ₪149.
